Explainer
Open License allows others to create remixes (derivative works) based on your original music but with a limitation. They can only create remixes directly from your original tracks (meaning they cannot create a remix of a remix of your original track) and must give you attribution (credit) for the original work. You'll also receive a percentage of any revenue they make from their remix.
This option is suitable if you want to permit remixes of your music but prefer to ensure that only one level of remixing is allowed.
On the other other side of the remixing equation, when you make a remix of an original work that you bought and received an Open License to make remixes for commercial purposes, you have to give attribution to the original artist and the original work.
You also have to pay the artist who created the original work a percentage of the revenue you make when you sell or use your remix for commercial purposes.
For greater flexibility, you may consider opting for the Open License Plus.
The amount you pay is decided by the artist who created the original track and explained in "Exhibit A" of the OURSONG TERMS OF SERVICE.
Examples
Specific remix permissions:
A musician might choose to release their music under an Open License to allow others to create remixes directly from their original tracks while maintaining control over the extent of remixing.
This can be beneficial if the artist wants to encourage creativity but prefers to set limitations on the number of people who have the right to remix.
Promoting collaboration:
An artist might use an Open License to promote collaboration with other musicians, where each artist can create one generation of remixes of each other's music.
This enables a collaborative environment while respecting the boundaries set by the original creators.
Controlled remixing for commercial purposes:
A musician might choose the Open License to allow one generation of remixes of their music to be used for commercial purposes, such as in advertisements or films.
This can provide opportunities for commercial exposure while maintaining control over how the music is adapted and utilized.
Overall, the Open License provides musicians with a balanced approach to permitting remixes of their work, offering flexibility in remixing possibilities while still defining the boundaries of remixing to protect the integrity of the original music.
